Faculty Spotlight: Khalid Kadir

Dr. Khalid Kadir won the 2019 Teaching Award from the American Cultures Center for his work developing and teaching this course.

Before Dr. Khalid Kadir began teaching in the AC curriculum, he taught nine cohorts of students both before and after their completion of six-week poverty alleviation-related internships. Working with these students allowed him to discover the transformative potential of coursework combined with deep engagement in marginalized communities. This insight led him to create an innovative new engineering course at the intersection of environmental engineering and social justice.

Student Spotlight: Jed Lee

Jed Lee received the 2020 American Cultures Student Prize for his documentary work on the film “Greenway,” created for his E157AC spring project. In the film, Jed Lee documents how the Greenway was born from grassroots organizing, and the knowledge and collective memory of community members that have contributed to its development.

What was once an abandoned railroad line in Richmond, CA is now a beautiful stretch of walking path decorated with gardens, murals, and parks. Richmond’s Greenway is a testament to the city’s rich history of community organizing, as it takes a sustained collaborative effort between the City of Richmond, over 17 nonprofit organizations, and community members to maintain it.
